Energy storage systems store energy in different forms (electrical, chemical, thermal, mechanical, etc.) and make it reusable when needed. These systems increase energy continuity and reliability by balancing the difference between when energy is produced and when it is consumed. They are especially used to balance fluctuations in the production of renewable energy sources (solar, wind). With the proliferation of inherently intermittent energy sources such as solar and wind, these systems have become an indispensable part of the energy infrastructure. Thanks to storage technologies, an uninterrupted energy supply can be ensured by using pre-stored energy even at night when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing.
In electricity grids, the balance between supply and demand must be maintained, otherwise frequency deviations can destabilize the grid. At this point, energy storage systems ensure system stability by activating when needed. In addition, since energy can be stored during times of low electricity demand and used during times of high demand, it offers both cost advantages and increases energy efficiency. Energy storage systems provide not only technical, but also environmental and economic benefits. By making energy production more efficient, it is possible to reduce the use of fossil fuels, thus reducing carbon emissions. In this respect, they also play a key role in combating climate change. At the same time, they contribute to both individual and social security by ensuring the uninterrupted operation of critical infrastructures as an emergency power source.
